Jacques-Cartier River, Jacques-Cartier Provincial Park, Quebec
A River for All Seasons
Nominated
The magnificent valley of the Jacques-Cartier is cut deep into the ancient bedrock of the Canadian Shield. The river, framed by forests of maple and birch, splits the spruce-covered plateau of the Laurentians. In the upper reaches, within Jacques-Cartier Provincial Park, rapids and waterfalls are interspersed with placid pools and runs. The lower reaches wind past historic villages where flour mills, fishing lodges, forts and manor houses remind us of a time when the river was a route for lumbermen, missionaries and settlers. |
