Margaree-Lake Ainslie River System

Margaree-Lake Ainslie River System, Nova Scotia
Secret Pools and Tranquil Glades
Designated 1998

The Northeast Margaree rises on the plateau of the rugged Cape Breton Highlands, while the Southwest Margaree slips and slides out of Lake Ainslie, the largest natural lake in Nova Scotia. The two branches tumble over rapids and waterfalls, through deep salmon pools and still marshes, and rich forested floodplains, merging at Margaree Forks and continuing on to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The icy clear waters of the wild upper reaches are a mecca for spawning Atlantic salmon and trout. Downstream, fertile farms, weirs and villages rich in Acadian and Scottish heritage are framed by maple ridges that provide vibrant autumn vistas. The Margaree calls out to fishermen and hikers to explore its secrets.
