Missinaibi – the sound of its name slips softly like a canoe through still waters. A silver thread of unspoiled wilderness across the boreal forest, the Missinaibi still appears much as it did when Ojibway, Cree and, later, Voyageurs, used it as the main trade route linking Lake Superior with James Bay. Red ochre images painted on stone, a solitary wooden cross and ancient portage trails connect the modern voyageur with the river's rich past as a highway for native people and fur traders. The roar of Thunderhouse Falls, the exhilaration of the rapids, the freedom, solitude, silence and spirit of wilderness – the Missinaibi.
