State of the River 2005-2006
Tatshenshini River (Yukon)
"Shäwshe Chù"
Designated in 2004
The Yukon portion of the Tatshenshini River was designated to the Canadian Heritage Rivers System CHRS) during 2004. It was designated for its outstanding natural, cultural and recreational values and is recognized nationally and internationally as a river providing outstanding recreational opportunities in a wilderness setting.
The entire area is a key to the well being of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations and was part of their land claims agreement which states that the river would be nominated and considered under the CHRS. Following the signing of their Final Agreement in May of 1993 and the subsequent commitment to nominate the river, work commenced on the establishment process with the river being nominated during 1998.
The Tatshenshini River Management Strategy was tabled with the Canadian Heritage Rivers Board for their consideration at the May 2004 meeting. It was accepted by the Board and a formal announcement was made by the Honorable Stéphane Dion, Minister of the Environment, during December 2004. A dedication ceremony took place during July of 2005.
Implementation of the Strategy has begun with priority being placed on a resource assessment of current recreational sites that are being used upstream from Dalton Post –Shäwshe area. This work had been scheduled for the 2005 rafting season however it was deferred to the 2006 season due to low water levels.
