The Upper Restigouche, New Brunswick
River of Enchantment
Designated 1998
At daybreak on the Restigouche, sunlight slashes through the shroud of early morning mist, dances across the fast-flowing water and inches up sheer rock faces. A great blue heron stands silhouetted in the sunlight. Suddenly a salmon leaps, and a lone angler standing in the water, casts a fly, the line gracefully unfurling. These are the wates of the Restigouche, originally used by the Mi’kmaq and Maliseet Nations as a travel route and rich source of food. Today, Atlantic salmon can still be seen in the clear waters of approximately 60 salmon pools. While the Restigouche is recognized as one of the best salmon rivers in North America, it also offers opportunity for wildlife viewing, canoeing and camping. |
