Paddle from Petawawa to Pembroke

Welcome to the 4th annual Miramichi Lodge Paddlequest. This fundraising event, planned for the second Sunday in June to coincide with National Rivers Day, is organized by the Miramiachi Lodge Foundation to raise funds that will directly enhance the quality of life of the Lodge’s residents. This year’s event is dedicated to an Ottawa Valley paddling icon Don Smith, a tremendous supporter of Paddlequest who passed away in January of this year.

Paddlequest is an organized flat water paddle (not a race), that will follow a route from the sandy beaches of Petawawa Point, at the mouth of the Petawawa River, down the historic Ottawa River to Pembroke’s Riverside Park, adjacent to the New Miramichi Lodge. The total distance of the route is 15 kms and we expect the duration to be approximately 3 hours including a half-way stop at Pine Ridge Park (comfort station, first aid post and refreshments).

For more information and to participate, contact committee members Larry and Netty Graham 613-732-3691 ext 228, Fred Blackstein 613-638-1994 or Donna Cotnam at Miramichi Lodge 613-735-4693 ext. 123.

CITY STREAM WATCH EVENT

BENTHIC INVERTEBRATE SAMPLING / ID SESSION

The City Stream Watch program is holding a “Benthic Invertebrate Sampling/ID Session” for interested volunteers. This session is intended to teach the importance of aquatic invertebrates as part of the food chain and their role as bioindicators of aquatic heath. Volunteers will also learn the basics of the OBBN protocol (Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network), the various scientific methods of capture, and how to process and identify many different species. The session will be taught by Brady Stevenson (Resource Technician – RVCA).

Signup will be by email, Grant.nichol@ottawa.ca, and there will be 20 spaces available for interested volunteers. There will be a waiting list for those who email after signup is full in case of cancellations.

Revisiting the Thames River

The Philip Aziz Foundation in London Ontario has decided to execute a journey on the Thames River based on a vibrant book about the same journey 126 years ago.

The book is called “Kuhleborn a Tour of the Times.”

The Philip Aziz Foundation will take another tour of the times on Saturday, June 9th, where they will photograph, sketch, and write observations about changes that may have occurred during the last 126 years.

They will follow the original book, nothing the descriptions of landscapes, towns, landmarks, villages and cities that exist to this day, or have disappeared.

The total trip will be 8 days with a final destination of Light House Cove.  The artists, writers, and photographers will then have a year to put their thoughts together for various exhibitions.

Revisiting the Thames River will be a great opportunity to celebrate the Heritage River with the rest of Canada on Canadian Rivers Day.

Gordon Haggert along with sponsors Windsor Essex Canoe Club and the ORCKA invites the public to an introduction to safe canoeing and kayaking in Windsor, Ontario on Sunday June 10th

There will be ORCKA certified instructors on site for persons 13 to 80 who are interested in future paddling.  They will celebrate Canadian Rivers Day by learning about water safety precautions and regulations, and canoe and kayak strokes and manoeuvers.

Contact ghaggert@mnsi.net to reserve a place.

Leif Helmer and David Williams from Nova Scotia Environment and Labour are planning a canoe/kayak trip down one of Nova Scotia’s two Canadian Heritage Rivers, the beautiful Margaree.

They will start at Margaree Forks and finish at the bridge at Margaree Harbour.

Some paddling experience is required, and participants should bring their own boats and equipment.

The event will be from 1-4pm on Sunday, June 10th.
