Canadian Rivers Day, June 10th, 2007
Rivers are the veins of Mother Earth.

Celebrate Canadian Rivers Day!

Canada is a land of rivers. White ribbons cascading through the endless boreal forest. Silver ribbons sliding down broad glacier-carved valleys. Muddy ribbons meandering across the prairies. Ribbons of green linking a labyrinth of lakes on the Canadian Shield. Rivers are everywhere imprinted on the Canadian landscape and in our history and culture.

Canadian Rivers Day

Long before Europeans arrived, a tracery of rivers and canoe routes stitched the continent together. Rivers carried the early European explorers in the birch bark canoes of the Aboriginal Americans into the heart of the continent and to its very edges. Today, we still use rivers as travel routes. We swim and fish in their waters, are challenged by their rapids, find peace and solitude along their shores. But we often do not stop to acknowledge the importance of rivers in our lives. Canadian Rivers Day gives us the chance to take a moment to experience this essential attribute of Canada, to honour our rivers and thank them.

In celebration of our rivers, exciting events take place across the country. Whether you take part in an organized event or plan your own Sunday afternoon on June 10th, you will be experiencing Canadian Rivers Day.
