The Canadian River Stewardship Awards are presented every three years to individuals, groups or organizations who have made a significant contribution to the stewardship of a Canadian Heritage River or to the Canadian Heritage Rivers System through work that supports river nomination, designation, stewardship, collaborative river care, public outreach and engagement and/or restoration work during the previous three years.

Nominations will be evaluated, in part, on their alignment with the four priorities outlined in the Strategic Plan for the CHRS: 

  1. Advancing Indigenous reconciliation on Canadian Heritage Rivers
  2. Strengthening the Canadian Heritage Rivers network
  3. Excellence in river management and conservation
  4. Engaging Canadians in celebrating and stewarding Canadian Heritage Rivers
